Vinehealth Australia has released a series of fact sheets examining phylloxera spread in the Yarra Valley’s Maroondah Phylloxera Infested Zone (PIZ) which include key learnings for your region.
The fourth fact sheet, ‘What would the Yarra Valley do differently’, details what vineyard owners, wineries, industry organisations and government bodies could have done differently to control the spread of phylloxera in the Yarra Valley region.
Key learnings include:
- Encourage and reward self-reporting by vineyards.
- Declare the whole Geographical Indication (GI) region a Phylloxera Infested Zone (PIZ) as this will be easier to manage.
- Replant on phylloxera-tolerant rootstock.
- Ensure that visitation and cellar door events are controlled. Do not allow visitors into vineyards.
- Focus on education of contractors and suppliers and how to best prevent the spread of phylloxera.
