This month, Vinehealth Australia is bringing critical biosecurity training to the Limestone Coast and Barossa regions to equip contractors and vineyard owners with the knowledge and tools they need to protect the state’s $1.8 billion wine industry.
With pruning season just around the corner, the movement of contractors around vineyards heightens, making vines more vulnerable to the introduction or spread of pests, diseases and weeds.
Recognising this, Vinehealth Australia created a ‘Biosecurity for Contractors’ training program to provide practical strategies for managing risks. Led by viticulture expert Liz Riley of VitiBit, the two upcoming sessions are:
- Tuesday 17 June, 9am to 1pm, Coonawarra Soldiers Memorial Hall, Limestone Coast
- Wednesday 18 June, 9am to 1pm, Jacob’s Creek Cellar Door, Rowland Flat, Barossa Valley
Participants will learn how to identify key vineyard pests and diseases, assess their own biosecurity responsibilities, and understand the economic and environmental impact a biosecurity outbreak can have.
The sessions will also focus on the ‘clean in, clean out’ protocol, a simple approach to reducing risks through machinery and equipment hygiene.
In addition to technical training, attendees will receive business tips on how to integrate biosecurity into day-to-day operations, from planning and record-keeping to contractor-client communication.
Every participant will walk away with a Certificate of Attendance, illustrating their commitment to biosecurity best practice.
