On 21st December 2024, the Phylloxera and Grape Industry Board of South Australia – trading as Vinehealth Australia – will mark a significant milestone: 125 years of operation.

Vinehealth Australia is an organisation like no other in the world. Governed by an Act created in 1899, and funded by an industry levy, Vinehealth is the silent shield in South Australia that stands between thriving vineyards and devastating loss, safeguarding grapes, communities and livelihoods.

“As we approach the 125th anniversary of Vinehealth, let’s recognise our deep history and the significant contributions so many have made to protecting the grape and wine industry,” said Sam Scarratt, CEO of Vinehealth Australia.

“We have some visionary South Australian winemakers, including Thomas Hardy, William Patrick Auld, Herman Büring and Benno Seppelt, to thank for setting up the systems that have kept South Australian vines phylloxera free, despite increasing infestations in other parts of Australia and the world.

“Through these current tough industry times, we must keep working together to keep South Australia phylloxera free. There’s a lot at stake and we all play a part.”
