Vinehealth Australia has released a series of fact sheets examining phylloxera spread in the Yarra Valley’s Maroondah Phylloxera Infested Zone (PIZ) which include key learnings for your region.

The third fact sheet, ‘Key learnings’, details what vineyard owners, wineries, industry organisations and government bodies have learned about phylloxera management in the Yarra Valley region.

Key learnings include:

  • Be prepared: Because phylloxera does not immediately impact vines, it may be some time before phylloxera is discovered on a vineyard.
  • Genotype is important: Find out what the genotype is in your region to help determine appropriate rootstocks.
  • Not all vineyards within the Phylloxera Infested Zone have phylloxera. Good farm-gate biosecurity can slow the spread.
  • Establish clear rules for contractors and visitors around vineyard access, footwear and clothing.

This fact sheet is part of a series based on the Yarra Valley’s phylloxera outbreak experience.

Six fact sheets were developed by Vinehealth Australia for vineyard owners in South Australia and other phylloxera-free states and regions.

We sincerely thank Wine Yarra Valley, vineyard owners in the Yarra Valley, and Agriculture Victoria for their valuable input into this fact sheet series.
