The Phylloxera Management Working Group was formed between Vinehealth Australia and PIRSA in late 2024 to ensure both organisations are well-prepared in the event of a phylloxera outbreak in South Australia.
This work is due to be completed by the middle of 2025, with preparedness exercises being planned for later in the year. The focus of the Phylloxera Management Working Group is to define and complete the following activities:
Roles and responsibilities: Vinehealth and PIRSA understand and uphold their respective roles and responsibilities, and the supporting working arrangements, for phylloxera management in respect to relevant Acts.
Policy framework for phylloxera management: The policy principles for phylloxera management in SA, including decision-making criteria for Phylloxera Management Zones are clearly defined and understood.
Completed preparedness plans: The Phylloxera Response Plan and Phylloxera Industry Preparedness and Response Plan are finalised and agreed upon.
Communications tools for preparedness: Simple communications tools to support phylloxera preparedness are agreed upon and used by Vinehealth and PIRSA.
Public information on phylloxera preparedness: Phylloxera preparedness information on Vinehealth and PIRSA websites is up-to-date, easily accessible, and fit-for-purpose for key audiences.
High-level preparedness exercises: Testing and refining preparedness concepts and processes with key decision-makers and representatives.
These activities are crucial for guiding our phylloxera management efforts and will ensure that we are prepared for a phylloxera outbreak.
