Recently released research undertaken by Agriculture Victoria Research has improved our knowledge of phylloxera and how to better manage it.
Vinehealth Australia has translated seven key research findings into actions for industry from the final report by Agriculture Victoria, titled ‘Integrated management of established grapevine phylloxera: phase II’. These actions are important for industry to note and incorporate into standard operations and farm-gate hygiene practices.
While the wine industry has been successful in keeping phylloxera limited to small parts of Australia, if phylloxera were to spread, the cost to replace own root vines with rootstock would be in the billions of dollars. Therefore, efforts to prevent its spread are vital.
